The quest for wellness, for peace of body and mind, are concerns as old as the world. The Baths of Caracalla, built in the third century AD at the foot of the Aventine Hill, are strong evidence of this. Their technical complexity is admirable: 64 tanks with a capacity of 80,000 litres each, accommodating up to 1,600 people at any given time. Our modern spas and fitness centres have nothing on this! Especially since we have lost the concept of socialising that was inherent to these ancient baths, where attendance was part of the fabric of Roman life. This was where business was conducted. Imagine making a leap of more than 18 centuries into the past.
In a luxurious decor of statues, columns, and mosaics, you move through the caldarium-tepidarium-frigidarium, from hot to warm to icy-cold. This is followed by some exercises in the stadium, then a massage or other body treatment.
After a moment of study in the reading rooms, the library or a stroll through green spaces dedicated to meditation, you'll better understand the famous adage: Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body).
