A race on dragonback

The spectacular dragon boat festival (in Chinese “duanwu jie”) is a traditional celebration that marks the beginning of the summer season in China.

According to the belief, the yang symbolises energy, light and warmth. It peaks when the sun reaches its zenith during the summer solstice. It is also the moment for generations of Chinese kids to try on a popular game: making an egg stand at noon, which brings good luck.
The major event during the festivities is a “dragon” boat race. Competing teams board colourful decorated boats. The Dragon Boat Festival was inscribed in 2009 as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. As the race goes on over water, celebrations are aplenty on land with parades, dances and various other activities.
